Job Description
The Department of Geography and the Environment, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure track position in the area of Physical geography at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

We seek to hire a broadly trained physical geographer whose research and teaching focus on the response of landscape (geomorphic and/or ecological) dynamics to climate change, and who can make substantial technical and theoretical contributions that complement existing areas of expertise at Syracuse University. Candidates should demonstrate clear evidence of potential for a strong research program and successful teaching, as well as a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are particularly interested in hiring an environmental scientist who incorporates geospatial technologies (GIS, remote sensing, UAVs), modeling, and/or analysis of large datasets (i.e., ‘big data’) into their research and teaching. The successful candidate will be poised to make significant contributions to our department’s cluster in Physical Geography, Environmental Science and Landscape Processes, as well as other research and teaching clusters, according to their expertise.

We seek a scholar with the potential to contribute to initiatives across the Maxwell School and the broader university. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research beyond the department include the Center for Environmental Policy and Administration; the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute; the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs; the Campbell Public Affairs Institute; and regional programs in the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and European Union. The Department maintains strong collaborative links with other departments and programs in the Maxwell School and other colleges, including the Departments of Earth and Environmental Sciences; Biology; Civil and Environmental Engineering; and Food Studies. Syracuse University’s campus adjoins the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) and the Department of Geography and the Environment maintains close collaborative relationships with SUNY ESF faculty and students. Syracuse University has recently invested considerable resources in establishing cross-disciplinary research clusters, including in the areas of Energy and Environment; Big Data and Data Analytics; and Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, and the Human-Technology Frontier (among others), which present exciting opportunities for collaborative interdisciplinary research and teaching.

We especially welcome applications from candidates who will enhance diversity on our faculty and whose research, teaching, and community engagement efforts will contribute to diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environments for our students, staff, and faculty.
