Position Summary
Westminster College Tutors are self-motivated, patient, and timely communicators who have excelled in the courses for which they tutor, often after overcoming their own difficulty with the subject. They supplement classroom instruction with individual study sessions. Tutors can communicate subject matter effectively and provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in students. In addition, tutors may guide students to appropriate resources and faculty.
Required Qualifications
Students should have successfully completed or tested out of the courses for which they are serving as tutors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Gained proficiency in course materials and demonstrated competency through course completion with an above-average grade; OR gained the recommendation of course professor, indicating that the student can fulfill the needs of the position description;
- Interested in course content and confident in ability to assist others’ understanding;
- Be in good academic standing.
- Must have superb analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Must be available to tutor after school hours and some evenings.
- Must display professional behavior and friendliness, patience, and sensitivity to a diversity of students.

Primary Responsibilities

Description
- Tutors meet with tutees one-on-one or in small groups to provide academic assistance and support
- Tutors may help tutees with general study skills
- Knowledge of the subject matter
- Ability to communicate the subject matter effectively
- Application of different learning strategies, including active learning and peer-to-peer techniques
- Self-motivation and ability to work independently
- Ability to set goals and/or expectations during the first few sessions
- Help students develop or refine their study skills and become independent learners
- Demonstrated sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of the needs of students seeking learning support
- Ability to effectively learn and utilize videoconferencing and note-taking applications during tutoring sessions
- Tutors are expected to respond within 48 hours (two business days) to a request for assistance
- Complete an online log within 24 hours of each tutoring session
- Accurately record tutoring in time sheet
