Position Summary

The Lead Gardener is responsible for grounds landscaping and vegetable beds of a large estate. The Lead Gardener plans and manages gardening, greenhouses and grounds maintenance. The grounds include a large collection of species rhododendrons, a formal boxwood garden, water features, perennial border, meadows in spring bulbs, native plants, annual pots, landscape roses and rose cutting garden. The Lead Gardener is also responsible to care for the chickens.

Silverbow Farm employs organic farming practices in the care of both grounds and gardens, to promote a healthy and sustainable environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains all flowerbeds and vegetable gardens:
  • Conditions and prepares soils and plants seeds, seedlings or bulbs in greenhouse or outdoor growing areas
  • Fertilizes, waters, weeds, transplants, deadheads and thins plants in growing areas to maintain health of plants and beauty of display
  • Mixes and applies natural insecticides and fertilizers to maintain health of plants and prepares plants for installation in greenhouse or outdoor display areas
  • Maintains and repairs gardening tools, equipment and structures, such as greenhouses and hot beds
  • Seasonally, ensures fresh flowers in owners’ home
  • Collaborates with team to mow lawns, prune fruit and ornamental trees and bushes, and performs other duties to maintain grounds
  • Orders seeds, bulbs and plants, collaborating with Estate Manager
  • Cares for chickens: feed, water, collect eggs, etc.
  • Schedules and manages landscape related contractors
  • Maintains records
  • Performs other duties and manages special projects as assigned

Desired Qualifications:

  • Related certification from college or technical school; or
  • Three to four years related experience in gardening, grounds maintenance, nursery, parks or related activity.

Knowledge Required

  • Knowledge of care of plants and landscaping (planting, harvesting, fertilizing, location, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability and experience of landscaping, gardening, farming, and pruning trees
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with animal husbandry, or willingness to learn

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. using hand trucks.
  • Ability to work in changing weather conditions and to work in inclement weather
  • Ability to work a physical eight-hour day (planting, mowing, weed eating, pruning, etc.); reach, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Ability to talk and to receive and understand written and oral communication, and give written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work on ladders, with heights up to 15’, to perform pruning.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents (safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals).
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to calculate mathematic problems.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
