Merrick & Company is looking for an experienced
Mechanical Equipment Engineer III for our Albuquerque, NM office to serve as a staff engineer on technology projects for the Department of Energy (DOE). This group specializes in the design of prototype/one-off custom equipment, gloveboxes, hot cells, specialty research equipment and custom-designed mechanisms for handling radioactive and hazardous materials. This is a full-time, permanent position.
Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer III will perform detailed design and analysis of custom equipment, individually and as part of design team. Typical equipment includes containment systems (gloveboxes, hoods), material handling equipment, small scale process piping & equipment, furnace systems, metal working systems (mills, lathes, rolling machines) and pressure vessels.
Scope/Key Responsibilities
Follow regimented quality assurance / quality control procedures. Detailed design activities include preparation of fabrication drawing packages, equipment datasheets, fabrication specifications, procurement specifications, engineering studies, test plans, and detailed equipment sizing & qualification calculations. Meets expectations for attendance and punctuality. Responsibilities include coordinating / leading the detailed phases of a design and working directly with other engineering disciplines. This position will also require performing supervisory functions over small teams of engineers within the LOS and ABQ offices.
Required Experience
- Minimum of eight (8) years mechanical design engineering experience.
- Demonstrated capability in the design of custom equipment and/or containment systems, development of design documentation including fabrication drawings, engineering analyses, strength of materials calculations, fabrication and procurement specifications and basic knowledge in the selection of materials.
- Experience with 3D design software a plus – (PTC Creo preferred)
- Familiarity with MathCAD and MS Access a plus.
- Proficient in MS Office products (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
- Excellent written communication skills
- Demonstrated experience supervising and leading small groups of engineers.
- Degree Requirements: Bachelor of Sciences degree in Engineering required from an ABET Accredited Program. Engineering Technology degree will not be considered.
- Experience in the DOE and DOD market segments required.
- Applicant must be able and willing to obtain a DOE clearance.
- Relocation assistance will be considered.
- Remote work with frequent travel to the office will be considered.
- Position is in Los Alamos or Albuquerque, NM
- Candidate must have their Professional Engineering (PE) license.
- Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.

- Requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
- Be able to work in an environment with open discussions and visitors without getting distracted.
