Brief Description of Duties: The Pre Authorization Specialist is responsible for verifying eligibility, obtaining insurance benefits, and ensuring pre-certification, authorization, and referral requirements are met prior to the delivery of inpatient, outpatient, and ancillary services. This individual determines which patient services have third party payer requirements and is responsible for obtaining the necessary authorizations for care. The Pre Authorization Specialist provides detailed and timely communication to both payers and clinical partners to facilitate compliance with payer contractual requirements and is responsible for documenting the appropriate information in the patient's record. Responsible for notifying patients of authorizations. May also be responsible for scheduling procedures and test. The ideal candidate will also have nursing skills to assist in direct patient education for endocrine/diabetes related disorders.

Qualifications: Minimum of 1-2 years’ LPN or RN experience with phlebotomy skills is preferred. Experience with hospital and outpatient billing/pre-authorization or insurance verification with demonstrated knowledge of health insurance plans including: Medicare, Medicaid, HMO's and PPO's required.

Education: Graduate of an accredited baccalaureate or associate nursing program. Current unencumbered NYS Registered Nurse (RN) license.
