OVERVIEW

The Refining Value Chain Optimization group at the St. Paul Park Refinery is seeking candidates for an opening in the Planning and Economics group. The Planning group is responsible for optimizing refinery operations, developing short and long range production forecasts, feedstock scheduling, product production and scheduling, project analysis, and intermediate inventory management. All members of the team are expected to be actively engaged in ensuring all products meet specifications. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to interact with and influence many areas of the company. The group works closely with Operations and Technical Services to understand unit constraints and communicate the economic drivers of each of the operating areas. The team also works directly with Global Feedstock and Midwest Clean Product Value Chains, Asphalt Supply and Logistics, RVCO Findlay, and Product Quality to evaluate opportunities on feedstocks, products, and inter-refinery transfers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate will initially be trained to use APS software for refinery feedstock and product scheduling. The candidate will also have the opportunity to learn crude/black oil scheduling, gasoline blending, and the refinery linear program (PIMS) model for forecasting, as well as to train as a backup for those positions.
Responsibilities of the position include:
  • Developing planning and scheduling skills, training, and understanding various scheduling roles in the group, including LPG scheduling, Distillate scheduling, Asphalt/Black Oil scheduling.
  • Backfill opportunities will be provided for Crude scheduling, gasoline blending, and forecasting.
  • Working with Tech Service and Operations to identify and optimize around unit constraints.
  • Perform ad hoc analysis to guide business decisions around outages and slow downs.
  • Support daily refinery material balances for accounting and risk management purposes.
The position will work closely with the Global Feedstocks Value Chain and Clean Products Value Chain schedulers. The ideal candidate should be a strong communicator and interested in developing relationships with commercial partners. The applicant will be expected to work heavily in a team environment, but also expected to perform individual responsibilities with limited supervision. The position is on-call and will occasionally be called upon outside of normal working hours.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Degree: Bachelor of Science preferred
Major Discipline: Chemical Engineering or other Technical Discipline
Years Experience Required: A minimum of 3 years Refinery process or operations experience is preferred
Travel Required (%): minimal
The selected candidate will be considered a Commercial Engineer if they hold an Engineering degree
