RESTORATION PROJECT COORDINATOR
ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST 5 (ES5)

This is a project position funded through June 30, 2024.

Assist or lead in the planning, analysis, management and implementation of habitat restoration projects occuring on Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Lands in Region 4 (which includes King, Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, San Juan and Island Counties). This includes pursuing and securing funding, managing contracts, and organizing, participating in, and sometimes leading field work.

Become a program expert working with WDFW staff, the tribes, Counties and other outside entities to pursue land acquisition that meets WDFW mandates, including the acquisition of land that supports fish and wildlife recreation activities and/or is of high use to Chinook salmon and other endangered species which will help to satisfy the goals of their associated ESA recovery plans.

With that in mind,

Picture yourself, working with WDFW land managers and other programs to coordinate stewardship and aftercare of restoration projects on WDFW Lands in Region 4.

In this dynamic role, you will be collaborating with partners and Tribes to advance land acquisition priorities and ecosystem restoration projects.

With your experience, participate as a core project team member for restoration projects proposed on WDFW lands.

You are excited to identify needs, secure funding, and coordinate implementation of projects that improve habitat, recreation, and access on and around WDFW lands.

Our RESTORATION PROJECT COORDINATOR

  • Has lead responsibility on Wildlife Program led restoration and recreation projects on lands owned by the Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Coordinates with the agriculture community, local jurisdictions, Tribes, and other external entities to conduct meetings, develop partnerships, and resolve problems associated with projects on WDFW Lands.
  • Serves on restoration project teams as a core member and represents Wildlife Program for projects led by other Programs.
  • Works with all WDFW Divisions, the Tribes and other major landowners to develop and implement WDFW acquisition projects in Region 4 that support fish and wildlife recreation and/or recovery of ESA listed species.
  • Has lead responsibility for monitoring restoration areas on WDFW lands before and after projects.
  • Coordinates restoration project adaptive management, stewardship, and aftercare with Wildlife Area Managers, WDFW Noxious Weed Crew, and other programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • This position works in an office setting that includes reading, writing, phone and computer use and may include travel for field duties (See Travel Requirements). Potential hazards in the field include working around water, changing weather conditions, travel in motor vehicles and boats, and use of tools.
  • Schedule:
    • 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday with occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Frequent travel to and from field sites and meetings requiring the ability to operate vehicles safely on highway, dirt roads, and across uneven terrain.
    • Travel up to 10% of time.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • General office equipment including computers.
    • Field tools include water level monitoring equipment and installation of monitoring stations that requires hand tools such as fence post drivers, saws, and drills.
    • May also occasionally use surveying instruments.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Respectful and effective written and oral communication or negotiation with the public, local government officials, agriculture, forest, and special interest groups.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

  • A Bachelor's degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field and six (6) years of professional level experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning.

Note: A Master’s degree in one of the above fields will count towards two (2) years of experience. A Ph.D. in one of the above fields will count towards three (3) years of experience.

OR

  • One (1) year of experience as an Environmental Specialist 4.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Driver’s License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Job knowledge:
  • Habitat needs of species, especially ESA-listed and waterfowl species.
  • Typical steps needed to plan and implement large habitat and recreation projects.
  • Techniques used to restore ecosystem processes in Puget Sound.
  • Familiarity with restoration plans within Region 4.
