HJF is seeking a Scientist to develop and conduct research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.
This position will be in support of the Adjuvants and Formulation Section of the Laboratory of Adjuvant and Antigen Research, US Military HIV Research Program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The Scientist will conduct basic laboratory research in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, and immunology of liposomes and adjuvants. The Scientist will conduct research on the development of novel liposome formulations to be used as adjuvants for HIV-1 and other infectious disease vaccine candidates. Project also utilizes liposomal nanoparticles for mRNA-based vaccines.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts independent laboratory research to plan, develop, and characterize novel liposome adjuvant formulations including Army Liposome Formulations to generate scientific data for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Publishes original research in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presents results at laboratory and departmental meetings and at scientific conferences.
  • Effectively works with MHRP internal and external collaborators. As an essential duty, prepares and oversees the laboratory manufacturing ArmyLiposome Formulations and other adjuvants for collaborative studies on a as needed-basis.
  • Conducts immunogenicity studies with new liposomal adjuvant formulations, ALF-adjuvanted vaccine formulations and mRNA-LNP formulations in animals. Analyzes serum samples for antibodies by ELISA and collaborates with other MHRP investigators for functional and cellular assays.
  • Assists with the preparation of data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals.
  • Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data, must have practical experience in flow cytometry, tissue culture, and immunological assays.
  • Ability to write research papers and grants.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with minimum supervision.

Qualifications
Minimum Education:
Doctoral degree is required.
Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements:
Scientist I - Minimum 2-5 years of relevant work experience is required.
Associate - Scientist - Minimum 0-2 years of relevant work experience is required
