Position Description

White Salmon Valley Community Library is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time (40 hours/week), bilingual (Spanish/English) Senior Library Assistant. This is a great opportunity for individuals who have a passion for working with the public, creating and presenting programs to groups of patrons of all ages and who want to make a positive impact in their communities.

The primary responsibilities of a Senior Library Assistant are assisting with patrons and books in the library branch and planning and presenting programs in the branch and community. A typical day could include these tasks:
  • Answer patron questions regarding library resources and services, as well as technology, equipment and devices.
  • Plan and present programs, in coordination with the branch manager, supervisor and/or other Senior Library Assistant. This includes, but is not limited to a weekly story time for children, monthly family movie and monthly STEM program.
  • Participate in community events and deliver programs and services off-site.
  • Use of Spanish language skills to assist patrons and FVRL employees. Some examples may include communicating with patrons in the branch, bilingual programs, community outreach events and translating written materials.
  • Act as lead worker for the branch.
  • Perform routine circulation duties including creating and updating patron accounts and checking materials in and out.
  • Shelve materials and pull items for weeds.


Education & Experience

To be considered, applicants must have a combination of the following experience and training:

  • Three years clerical and/or technical library experience.
  • Previous library experience or more than one year and experience working with children.
  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking Spanish. Ability to pass an assessment demonstrating Spanish language proficiency.
  • High school diploma or GED

COVID-19 Vaccination

This position is responsible for outreach and maintaining partnerships with specific community organizations that require vaccination in order to interact with students in their facilities. At this time, they do not make exceptions for people with vaccination exemptions. If hired, candidates must be able to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination to our community partners in order to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Sundays: OFF
  • Mondays: OFF
  • Tuesdays: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Wednesdays: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Thursdays: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Fridays: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Saturdays: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM


Pay and Benefits

This position starts at $18.85 per hour and receives an additional 5% pay premium. We offer an excellent benefits package including health insurance benefits, life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment, short term and long term disability benefits, Washington State PERS retirement and paid time off.

We have an excellent benefit package. FVRLibraries covers 90-95% of full-time employees’ health insurance premium cost and 90-100% of dental insurance premium costs. In addition we provide employees with Life Insurance, AD&D and Long Term Disability Insurance at no cost to the employee. Employees have the ability to enroll in additional, voluntary life insurance, income protection plans, flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts.

Our employees enjoy 12 paid holidays throughout the year. Full time employees accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month. The initial vacation leave accrual is 11 hours per month; this increases over time based on years of employment. We also offer other types of paid time off for situations such as jury duty, bereavement leave, inclement weather and more.
