The US Forest Service, Methow Valley Ranger District in Winthrop, WA will be filling 2 full time Wilderness Ranger Volunteer Internships for the summer season. Volunteer Wilderness Rangers will join a diverse wilderness program in the North Cascades of Washington. The region includes the North Cascades Scenic Area and the Pasayten and Lake Chelan-Sawtooth wilderness areas. Duties include:
  • Conduct wilderness patrols providing visitor information and education addressing Leave-No-Trace camping, wilderness philosophy and minimal stock impacts.
  • Data collection and monitoring including visitor use, campsite inventory and GPS.
  • Assist in trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, and conduct trail surveys.
  • Perform ecological restoration, re-vegetation, and site naturalization.
  • Assist with stock packing projects.

Successful candidates will serve alongside seasoned wilderness rangers, and will work in small teams or solo. During the heart of the summer, crews typically work eight 10 hour days in the backcountry in a row, followed by six days off. During the early summer and fall, crews usually do shorter backcountry trips or day trips.

Strong backpacking skills and aptitude are a must, along with good communication, teamwork skills, and the ability to interact professionally with the public, including in high use areas. Interest in working with pack animals (mules, horses) is a bonus, but is not required.

Compensation amounts:
- $1,100 - one time RT travel allowance
- $300 - weekly living allowance
