This position will also provide support for the departmental teaching labs enrolling over 2000 students annually and manage the daily operations of the organic teaching lab, the advanced synthesis lab, and other labs as assigned. Managing the labs includes providing reagents and equipment, managing waste collection and disposal, assisting TA's and students, and maintaining a chemical inventory of over 200 chemicals as well as equipment and disposable items. Additionally, the Instructional Support Associate will help maintain and troubleshoot advanced chemical instrumentation.

Currently, hundreds of students take evening lab courses. Two days a week the person in this position will work from 2 PM to 10 PM. The last labs end at 9:45 PM. This position will provide the first line of support for all of the teaching labs in the evening enrolling approximately 200 students in about 8 courses. When labs have ended, the staff member will stay behind for an extra 10-15 min to check all labs (electrical and gas outlets as well as doors) for safety and security reasons.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide chemicals, equipment, and consumables for the assigned teaching labs. Maintain an inventory of chemicals and reagents and provide a list for ordering
  • Troubleshoot experiments and instrumentation for students and TA's during lab in real time as problems occur
  • Attend weekly meetings and provide reminders about keeping the labs clean and organized
  • Answer questions from teaching assistants, and possibly students in-person and by email
  • Help to develop and test new experiments for lab courses.

Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field from a college or university accredited by a US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Available for current work hours of 9 AM - 5 PM T, W and F and 2:00 to 10:00 PM on M, Th. Work hours are subject to change if course schedules change. This is an entry-level position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry
  • Experience handling toxic and hazardous chemicals
