WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is often exposed to wet, cold, hot conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Tests equipment for proper operation prior to production. Ensures all equipment is safely and properly assembled, and ready for production operation. Test equipment after repairs, changeovers or extended downtime.
  • Sets up and operates equipment and adjusts controls that regulate operational functions to ensure proper and safe operation according to manufacture specifications.
  • Direct a crew of production employees during shutdown periods to perform equipment maintenance, and building maintenance. Oversee the assignment and completeness of released preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Ensures Lockout/Tagout procedures are followed by plant personnel during cleaning, inspecting and any equipment maintenance.
  • Wears personal protective equipment such as: gloves, eye protection, and respiratory equipment as needed for a particular job.
  • Follows all safety rules regarding machine operation and proper guarding.
  • Train production line operators on the proper equipment operation and safety requirements.
  • Identify any equipment problems and inform management to ensure that necessary repairs can be scheduled.
  • Checks schedule to determine machinery to be cleaned and necessary cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Removes parts and dismantles equipment as required for proper cleaning. Cleans machines and equipment of dust, dirt, debris, including any filters or screens. Disposes of cleanup residue in proper containers according to plant procedures.
  • Is responsible for taking care of maintenance areas and electrical areas, keeping work area in neat condition.
  • Ability to learn and follow a set procedure for cleaning equipment.
  • Maintains cleaning equipment, power tools, and maintenance tools in proper working order.
  • Lubricate production and mechanical equipment moving parts as specified in company lubrication and machine maintenance instructions.
  • Changes oil in machine reservoirs and gearboxes or cleans and replaces oil filters as required.
  • Installs, replaces, or changes machine parts and attachments, according to production specifications.
  • Dismantles equipment, remove parts such as motors, gearboxes, bearings, etc. and reassembles using hand tools, chain falls, jacks, hoist, etc.
  • Cleans machine and machine parts, using cleaning solvent, cloth, air gun, hose, vacuum, or other equipment.
  • Collects and discards worn machine parts and other garbage to maintain machinery and work areas in clean, organized, and efficient manner.
  • Transport machine parts, tools, equipment, and other material between work areas and storage using forklift, or other means.
  • Performs work requiring knowledge of principles of operation of electrical equipment.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May perform product examination and rework when line is down due to causes beyond mechanic's control.
  • During production shutdown may paint machinery
  • On off shifts and weekends may be called upon to return to the plant for repairs.
  • Possible member of plant safety team inspecting safety violations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl; use ladders; and talk or hear. Manual dexterity sufficient to use hand tools, power tools, cleaning equipment, and to paint. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and /or move more than 60 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.

MUST be able to pass a Pre-employment drug test.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to understand and carry out routine oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence, and effectively present information to individuals or small groups.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Must be able to perform simple tasks independently after being given specific instructions.
  • Sufficient reading and writing ability to follow work order instructions and complete maintenance work orders. Must be able to read and comprehend instructions, machine manuals, diagrams, and general schedule guidelines.
  • Valid state driver’s license to operate company vehicle and ability to pass forklift operator test.
  • Attention and care required to prevent injury to others when performing maintenance work.
  • Ability to utilize equipment manuals and information to troubleshoot, repair, disassemble, and reassemble equipment and machines.
  • Basic knowledge of air systems, including solenoid valves, piping systems, and compressors.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical equipment, including motor starters, circuit breakers, test equipment, and electrical safety.
  • Basic knowledge if mechanical parts, such as bearings, belts, chains, sprockets, fasteners, gearboxes, lubrication, piping, and lubricants.
  • Ability to operate common shop equipment such as saws, torch, press, grinders, or drills. Use power tools and abrasive wheels to modify or repair equipment. Ability to use hand tools and trades type tools.
  • Satisfactory work record, as determined by plant management. Must be a steady, reliable worker.
  • Basic knowledge (Minimum 1year industry mechanical experience) of production machinery acquired in-company or elsewhere.
  • Willingness to work various shifts depending on production with a seven-day cycle.
