Position Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) announces an opportunity for a full-time Software Engineer. The Software Engineer will develop a testing and production environment for complex electronics equipment used on radio telescopes; will be responsible for procurement and assembly of the equipment as well creating and maintaining software; and will use the test environment to perform verification, to prepare equipment for deployment, and to troubleshoot issues.As part of a small, enthusiastic team, the successful candidate will report to the Digital Team Lead and will work closely with several electronics engineers, software engineers, and scientists.

In addition to technical abilities, this position requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills. The engineer must prepare documentation, provide technical training to technicians, operators, and scientists, and assist with installation of the equipment on radio telescopes.

This position is based at The NRAO Science Operations Center located in Socorro, NM, on the campus of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (www.nmt.edu). Socorro is a small, historical city in the Rio Grande Valley, 75 miles south of Albuquerque. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Socorro offers ample access to outdoor recreation. A partial teleworking arrangement may be considered.

Job Duties Summary

Duties of the Software Engineer:
Develop plans and solutions for executing verification procedures

Acquire, assemble, configure, and verify correct operation of a system of electronics devices

Provide performance information by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing engineering data

Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Install and configure software

Software development using C++ and Go under Linux

Web app development using Vue, HTML, Javascript, and CSS

Comply with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures

Other duties as assigned, relevant to the scope of this role

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in a research and development environment in an office or an electronics lab; will be required to stand and sit, and perform fine hand manipulation. Must be able to operate a personal computer.Occasional travel may be required.

Position Requirements:
Minimum Education

BS in Computer Science or related technical field

Minimum Experience

One year of experience in the following areas:
Assembling and configuring electronics equipment

Software development in a high-level language such as C++, Python, Go, or Javascript

Troubleshooting software and hardware issues

Preparing technical documentation

Preferred Experience

Three or more years of experience in areas listed in Minimum Experience plus:

Experience with failure reporting and tracking

Experience with configuration management tools

Experience with providing training

Additional Requirements

Physical Demands

Will occasionally be required to lift and carry lab equipment (up to 40 pounds) for relocation or installation of test apparatus, and to squat, kneel, or crawl to reach electrical/physical connections in tight spaces behind racks or under lab benches. May occasionally work at high altitudes.
